Encounter was an exciting arts project that happened in your town centre in 2011. It transformed six urban sites in Medway and the boroughs of Gravesham and Swale through a range of temporary, site specific installations, performances or events developed in partnership with local community groups.

A multi-channel, ambient sound installation for part of Sittingbourne High Street that aimed to transform the everyday experience into an ever-changing sonic happening.
Mr. Whale arrived in Gravesend from the sea. He spent his days touring the town with his mobile library collecting images for The Encyclopaedia of Gravesend.
A site-specific, open-air dance performance inspired by the architecture of Sheerness, Dante’s Paradiso and the language of South Asian classical dance.
A dance festival where physical energy was transformed into light and sound, for a programme of performances featuring both amateur and professional dancers. Performed in a vacant shop in Chatham, this ‘happening’ welcomed all to get involved, to watch the moves and enjoy a bite to eat or drink.
A touring sitting room, built entirely from paper and card. Furnishing public spaces in Gravesend, the installation brought family life into the public realm. The Sitting Room was co-designed and created by the local community and artists from Animate Arts Company.
A site-specific, promenade performance for Temple Manor in Strood. A collaboration between two Kent-based performance companies, Light and Shadow roamed the grounds, clung to the walls and surfaced from the bowels of this unique building, inviting the audience to explore with their senses.
